I Made Wianta, Sharp

I Made Wianta, Sharp

In Sharp (2008), I Made Wianta departs from his signature calligraphic abstraction and turns toward a materially grounded, almost sculptural approach. The canvas becomes a site of tension: a vertical line of coarse rope cuts through the painted surface, anchored by a cluster of nails at the top. This intervention creates a physical incision—both a mark and an object—that disrupts the otherwise serene, monochromatic field. The textured acrylic, applied in restrained tonal variations, evokes calmness, while the inserted materials introduce a counterpoint of roughness, weight, and tactility.

By integrating found objects into the canvas, he pushes painting toward the realm of assemblage, echoing the spirit of “combine” works while retaining his own minimalist sensibility. Sharp can be read as a metaphorical gesture: a line that divides yet connects, a boundary that holds tension, a quiet surface pierced by the realities of material and gesture.

It reveals Wianta not only as a painter of symbols and rhythm, but also as an artist deeply attuned to the poetic possibilities of objects and the space they inhabit.
