Evi Pangestu, Stretched Square
Evi Pangestu, Stretched Square
Stretched Squares started with a drawing of a square grid on canvas that was stretched onto the square stretcher frame. The pulling action in the stretching process created distortion to the well-ordered canvas strands, resulting in irregularity in the lines of the grid. Though each square is stretched the frame remains a perfect square, conveying a statement of fairness in the control that the painting began with, rebelled against, and is resting on in the end.
This body of work focuses on the idea of intention in a state of discomfort. I believe that humans are driven with the tendency to manage things in a perfect grid system according to their own standard and acceptance. However, most time we are under a bigger structure that requires fixing with agreeing and disagreeing, consequences and compromises.
